The best way to learn is hands on at a shop. I would never try to groom a dog via online or book learning. Too easy to injure the dog or get bit.
Plus groomers need insurance....people's dogs are like their kids....you can be blamed or sued for things that may or may not be your fault. You can lose your house, if you aren't careful.
Also grooming out the house without a business license can get you into trouble.
Learn by getting a job at a grooming shop or find an actual school near you. Otherwise you might spend a lot of money on an online course and find out you don't enjoy the work.
Grooming is extremely physical and hard work. It sounds fun, but many days are not FUN. Dealing with the dogs can be the easy part. Dealing with owners takes skill also.
I loved grooming, but saw many people drop out when they found out that many dogs tried to bite or pooped on the table or wouldn't stand up.
I was a decent trainer as well as a groomer, so my regular dogs were super well behaved after a while with me. And they liked coming to see me.
I kept my regulars on a 4-6 week schedule and I got succesful enough to turn away dogs that I didn't want to do, or had bad owners. I also checked vaccinations...no dogs came in without proof of shots...many shops do not do this.
Your own dogs can get sick if you let the wrong dog come to your house.

You really need to learn hands-on. There are things that simply cannot be taught online or by correspondence.
You need to find a good groomer in your area that will let you apprentice. Along with proper grooming techniques, you need to learn about handling dogs, health issues, canine first aid, dog psychology, training, breed characteristics and many other things.

I'm not sure about the grooming business in your home.....I'm trying to do so also, I'm not sure how to either. Also I've been taking home classes with Penn Foster......Its pretty good program. It costs about $800 and you get your books and you take your exams online or over the phone, you also get some grooming supplies.....I got a real nice professional pet clippers and combs....I would suggest Penn Foster, you can email me and can tell you more things about it and maybe we can become friends and I can help you through the program........heres my email (nwilson86@sbcglobal.net)
Good Luck.
